1968 Cougar GTE 427 Side Oiler For Sale

Sale Pending...

The 1968 Cougar GTE is one of the coolest and most sought after musclecars ever made. It was the only Ford you could order in 1968 with the legendary 427 Side Oiler engine. There were only 279 XR7 GTE ever made. The car is registered in the GTE Registry. You can also find more information about them at the GTE registry website. This particular car is from eastern Oregon which is very dry. Hence, it has ZERO rust and most of it's original paint. Also, it is one of the most documented GTEs in existance. There are persistent rumors of the original block being for sale in Oregon (I will provide the owner's name to the buyer). The blocks were not vin stamped and you will see in the engine section I have a correct date coded side oiler block which comes with the car as well as the unobtainable "J" heads and the original vin stamped transmission. The car comes with almost everything needed including original emblems, carburator(s) and intake. The missing pieces are all engine related and are easily obtainable as they are shared with 68 390 engine. The one tough item is the exhaust tips. However, reproductions are being made and the 70 Mustang tips are similar.

This is the best project GTE project car you will find. All the hard to find parts are there (except the exhaust tips). The car has zero rust and the nicest floorboards I have ever seen. My plan was to reassembled the engine, rebuild the transmission and clean the car up as a "survivor/driver". While the car is clearly a project, with a little bit of touch up, clean up and ding repair I figured I could have a really cool cruise night vehicle. From a project perspective, this is pretty easy to calculate as mechanical work is the most predicatable when restoring a car. Consider that in the car hobby, survivors are gaining more and more value relative to restored cars. I have seen slightly beaten looking survivor cars go for more money then top dollar restorations.

I bought this car from well known Cougar dealer Don Rush in 2005. Here is the original thread on the couguar forum from when Don posted it on eBay. A few weeks after I bought my car, Don sold a gold/gold GTE that was missing the engine and was rusty for $25k. At about the same time, he sold a blue one in similar condition to mine, but with the original engine dissassembled for $60k.

If you go through the text and pictures below most questions should be answered. If not, please email me and I'll do my best to help you. The price is $37,000 or best offer. I'm not looking to do any trades at this time. I have too many projects going on and need to generate some money for them. I have a clear Massachusetts title in MY NAME. NOTE: I have the original hi-res pictures for any of the ones on this site and can email specific ones if requested. I did not have the disk space on my web-server to put them out there at that resolution. I can also take additional pictures if needed.

Notes on Delivery

This car should stay on the East coast as we almost never get to see original sheetmetal like this. However, when I bought it I had it closed-trailer shipped (it has to be a closed trailer with that GTE trim on the side) from Oregon to Massachusetts for 1100.00 so it could go back that way. With the price of fuel, that would be more now. If you buy the car and need it shipped, I can certainly help load it. However, some of the expensive pieces that are not on the car (Heads, emblems, carburators) will need to be shipped seperately (insured of course). I think the block will fit in the trunk with the transmission.
